Foreword
The experience of recent years in conducting wine tours has suggested to us one condition without which a wine tour in Montenegro will not work. The condition is simple. You don't have to leave early for tastings. We usually leave at 10am. How so? Yes, because before lunch it is better to hold one tasting, and after a hearty lunch the second is possible. Believe us, in hot Montenegrin weather is better for everyone.
We start with a visit to the huge wine cellar of the state-owned company “Plantage”, the largest wine producer in Montenegro.
We will book this tasting in advance. A small amusement train awaits us at the wine cellar and takes us through the vineyards. On the way, our guide will translate the story of the company guide accompanying the locomotive about grapes and wine, and in 20 minutes we will return to the wine cellar. In a cool cellar, between huge wine barrels made of Slovenian and French oak, a table with wine tasting and light snacks awaits us.
The amount of wine and snacks depends on the tariff plan you choose, it is possible to order 3 or 5 types of wine. During the tasting, pretty Montenegrin women tell us about each type of wine, guide us through a 100-meter-long cellar and give us the opportunity to buy plantation products at a significant discount. After visiting this company, we will either take a walk around the capital of Montenegro, Podgorica, go shopping (about an hour) or go straight to lunch. If you wish, our guide will suggest the right fish or meat restaurant “for the locals”. By the way, good homemade wine is also served here. You will order a carafe, then another...
“Drink until the bottle beckons..”
After lunch we visit a small private winery - “Winaria” (this is what private wine production is called here). It is located near Lake Skadar. In the family business, all generations are involved in this difficult craft. The vineyard is very close to their house, we will definitely see old and young vines. The 80-year-old grandfather is the brains of production, father and mother plow and taste, and the daughter is a trained food technologist and takes strict care of everything.
The hosts are very sincere and simple people, and by their example you can see the life of ordinary Montenegrins from the inside. The life of Montenegrins here, in the hinterland and on the coast, are two big differences, believe us. Their wine selection is not very large, 3-4 varieties depending on the season, but they produce exclusive rosé wine. Several types of liqueurs and rakia. We will try them too.
We end our wine tour with a drive along the most beautiful Montenegrin coast.
